MILL PRESENTS: Kolumbo

Since he was a landlocked Dallas, Texas kid, beach culture has held a tropical mystique for Kolumbo composer, arranger, keyboardist Frank LoCrasto. Family trips documented by camcorder videos, featuring slinky jazz-fusion soundtracks are etched in the Brooklyn-based artist’s memory. In his mind, there will always be a fantasyland replete with wicker furniture, pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, the smell of vanilla-scented suntan lotion, and breathtaking aqua water expanses.

MILL PRESENTS: Adam O’Farrill’s ELEPHANT

Over the course of the last decade, Brooklyn native Adam O’Farrill (b. 1994), has cemented himself as one of the most in-demand trumpet players on the international contemporary jazz scene, and is widely recognized as a “rising star as a player and composer” (PopMatters) and “a blazing young trumpet talent” (The New York Times). Of course, none one of this comes as any surprise, considering the rich musical lineage into which he was born: Adam’s grandfather was the boundary-pushing Cuban composer and arranger, Chico O’Farrill; his father is the composer, pianist, and activist, Arturo O’Farrill; his mother, Alison Deane, is a classical pianist and educator; his brother and frequent collaborator, Zack O’Farrill, is a drummer and musicologist.

MILL PRESENTS: The Bad Plus

The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades they have played with spirit and adventure, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance. The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone)– instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync. The Bad Plus is set to release their 18th album via Mack Avenue Records on Friday, November 8th. “Evolution is necessary for life and creativity,” say Dave King and Reid Anderson. “We’ve evolved, but we’re still The Bad Plus.”

MILL PRESENTS: GEORGE

Drummer/composer John Hollenbeck is a composer of music uncategorizable beyond the fact of being always identifiably his: a conceptualist able to translate the traditions of jazz and new music into a fresh, eclectic, forward-looking language of his own invention, a drummer and percussionist possessed of a playful versatility and a virtuosic wit, and a musical thinker allergic to repetition, forever seeking to surprise himself and his audiences. Hollenbeck formed GEORGE during the Covid pandemic, bringing together three musicians that he’d long admired – saxophonist/flutist Anna Webber and keyboardists/vocalists Chiquita Magic and Sarah Rossy.

ARTIST RECEPTION: STEPHEN HENDEE

In 2025 The Mill commissioned Baltimore based artist Stephen Hendee to create a new work spanning 40' in length in the entryway passage to our speakeasy, The Knock. Gold Linear Beam is a site specific sculptural installation comprised of 10 modules coated in reflective gold laser cut cast acrylic. The smooth mirror-like finish is interrupted with geometric faceted insets, refracting light and objects nearby. Located in proximity to Hendee's 2024 illuminated light sculpture, Buisine, visitors are invited to delve deeper into the artist's world.
