After a sold out performance with Richard Reed Parry and Sarah Neufeld last fall, Montreal/NYC-based cellist and composer Rebecca Foon returns to The Mill on May 16th to present new music from her most recent album, Black Butterflies. Foon’s album blends post-rock, modern classical, and ambient elements into deeply immersive soundscapes that radiate both intimacy and strength. Foon will perform the album live with her band, featuring her sister Aliayta Foon-Dancoes {violin) and Gladstone Deluxe (electronics & percussion), bringing the record's layered, cinematic world to the stage.
Rebecca Foon is a Montreal/NYC-based cellist, composer, visual artist, and climate activist whose work spans over 15 albums, numerous film soundtracks, and large-scale visual installations. A founding member of the Juno-winning ensemble Esmerine (Constellation Records), she has also released acclaimed solo works under her own name and as Saltland. Her most recent album, Black Butterflies, has earned widespread critical acclaim, recognized as one of her most emotionally resonant works to date.
Foon has collaborated with an array of artists including Patti Smith and Jesse Paris Smith, Laurie Anderson, Flea, Nick Cave, Tanya Tagaq, Patrick Watson, and Lhasa de Sela. Her visual art practice explores large-scale photographic light boxes of natural landscapes, most recently exhibited at Pen and Brush in New York City. As co-founder with Jesse Paris Smith of the nonprofit Pathway to Paris, she has organized international concerts featuring artists such as Thom Yorke, Patti Smith, Joan Baez, and Michael Stipe to mobilize climate action. She is also co-founder of Junglekeepers, protecting 85,000 acres of rainforest in Peru.
